The pecan tree originates from North America and can grow to a height of 40m. It is known and cultivated for its fruit, the pecan nut, with an edible seed. Native American Indians were eating pecan nuts over 6,000 years ago and used the wood to make tools. Different parts of the pecan tree were also used in traditional medicine. The shell of the pecan nut represents an important coproduct in the food industry, with between 40-50% of shell in the nuts. The shells have a very interesting composition rich in polyphenols and tannins, giving them antioxidant properties. Today, the pecan is economically an important nut-producing tree in the United States and Mexico, the world's main pecan nut producers. The pecan tree is also grown, to a lesser extent, in Israel, South Africa, Australia and France. Produced from the pecan nut shell, pecan tree extract (organic plant) is an exclusive development of Clarins Phytochemistry Laboratory.
