Body Care Tips: Why, How and When To Use Body Scrubs

Exfoliating has been known to work wonders for the skin. From removing dead skin cells which causes dullness, to increasing the absorption rate of your other skin products, it is surprising that there aren’t many products dedicated to exfoliating your body. Yes, you read that right, body scrubs are what you should be stocking up on. Face scrubs or exfoliants are plentiful, however the same cannot be said for body scrubs despite the similarity in terms of benefits. Read on and find out how body scrubs can give you the most glowy, youthful skin of your life.

Why should you use body scrubs?

An exfoliating body scrub has a deeper reach than body wash when it comes to cleansing your skin of impurities. A scrub will help to exfoliate your skin and cleanse it of dead skin, dirt, oil and sweat which can be helpful if you are prone to body acne and dry scaly skin. Regularly exfoliating with a body exfoliator also prevents dark patches from developing on areas such as your elbows and knees. It may also help your skin look more radiant as it gently removes dead skin cells which cause dullness. Not only will you end up with softer, smoother skin, a body scrub may even help prevent ingrown hairs and make hair removal easier!

How to pick the right body scrub

Picking the right body scrub for your skin type and condition is essential. Too abrasive and you may end up aggravating any existing skin issues you may have, but too mild and it may not work as well as you hoped.

If you have sensitive skin, a mild scrub that contains fine granules such as our cream-textured Exfoliating Body Scrub will work best as bigger granules such salt and nuts may leave your skin with microscopic tears that increase the risk of acne. Refreshing, moisturising and exfoliating, this scrub contains smoothing Natural Bamboo Powders and just a hint of Ginger to polish and soften skin while simultaneously stimulating skin renewal for a brighter, more radiant and smoother skin.

To buff off dry flakes of skin, look for a body scrub that is moisturising and infused with essential oils such as our Tonic Polisher that is formulated with Rosemary, Rosewood, Mint, Sugar and Salt Crystals for softer, smoother skin. This body scrub promises to restore your skin’s glow while hydrating your skin to leave it radiant and sleek.

How to use body scrubs

To avoid damaging your skin, wet your body with warm water before applying your scrub of choice. Be careful not to use hot water as this may damage your skin, instead. Warm water simply helps to open up pores so that the scrub can deeply cleanse any impurities that may be clogging your pores. Massage the scrub in circular motions over your skin, focusing particularly on areas such as your elbows, thighs, knees, feet and other problem areas you may wish to clean. Do take care to avoid your groin area as a scrub may be too abrasive for delicate areas. Once you have thoroughly scrubbed your body, rinse it off with warm water and towel dry before applying a moisturising body lotion that targets dry skin, such as Clarins’ Moisture-Rich Body Lotion to lock in moisture.

Keep the number of times you exfoliate to a maximum of 2 times per week to ensure you don’t strip your body of its natural protective barriers, and don’t forget to use a body moisturiser after exfoliating for best results.

When not to use body scrubs

It may seem counterintuitive to tell you not to use a body scrub in the same breath that we are advocating for it, however, there are still certain circumstances in which you shouldn’t be using them. You should avoid body scrubs if you have broken, irritated skin, rashes, sunburn or existing conditions such as eczema. It is also advised that you use a body scrub before rather than after shaving, as using a scrub after shaving may result in irritated skin and an unpleasant stinging sensation.
